Malvern Instruments team receives the Innovation Award at Powtech 2011
Powtech Innovation Award
Germany. Only a month after its launch, Malvern Instruments' Mastersizer 3000 laser diffraction particle size analyzer is enjoying another moment in the spotlight, as one of the winners at the Powtech Innovation Awards presented at the exhibition in Nuremberg, Germany.
The awards, given at each Powtech/Technopharm by the technical journals PROCESS, PharmaTEC and Schüttgut, are open to all exhibitors.
Paul Kippax, Malvern's Product Group Manager, who set the requirements for the system and worked along side the Mastersizer 3000 development team in delivering it, collected the award together with Mark Wingfield, General Manager for Malvern Instruments GmbH.
"I am delighted for Malvern that our new system has been successful in winning this Innovation Award and I was extremely honoured to receive it on behalf of the entire Mastersizer 3000 team," said Mr Kippax. "We believe that the Mastersizer 3000 really does make for smarter particle sizing and to have public recognition of the innovation involved is especially pleasing."
Mastersizer 3000 is a new generation system that raises particle sizing to a smarter level, delivering performance and productivity advantages. A key feature is that anyone, from novice to particle sizing expert, can take good measurements and get exactly the data they need quickly and easily.
Simple intuitive software lightens the analyst's workload, driving user-defined measurements and delivering applications expertise to the user in a simple and straightforward way at the point of measurement.

Freeman's FT4 Powder Rheometer measures a wide range of bulk and dynamic powder properties
New research revealed
UK. New research from
powder characterisation specialist Freeman Technology uses the company’s
FT4 Powder Rheometer to explore the application of dynamic powder
testing in assessing the impact of humidity on powder
flow. Members of Freeman Technology's team will be on hand to discuss their findings and demonstrate the Rheometer. The research will be of interest to
manufacturers who want to improve their ability to control and more
effectively manage this aspect of powder
processing.
The new data indicates that moisture adsorbed from the environment can have a range of effects, depending on the powder, whether hydrophobic or hydrophilic, and the results challenge the simplistic conclusion that all adsorbed moisture is detrimental to powder flow.
In addition the work shows that under conditions of either low or extremely high humidity the impact of moisture on powder flow properties is not linear. The conclusion is that no single powder
property precisely captures the effects of humidity but that measurement
and analysis of a combination of bulk and dynamic powder properties does
provide a degree of insight.
All will be revealed on Freeman's stand.

Innovative concept in spray
drying
Denmark. At PowTech/Technopharm, GEA Niro will present what it describes as a new state-of-the-art spray dryer for aseptic pharmaceutical production called AsepticSD. Based on a new concept, the spray dryer is sterilised using steam, a method that meets regulations and guidelines put forward by the FDA and EMA and other such agencies. The method allows aseptic free-flowing powders to be produced in a single step.

Grinding and classifying
UK. Producers of
ore, coal, clay, cement, fertiliser, limestone, slag, pigments and other
minerals have depended on Bradley technology, engineering and equipment
for over 100 years. The Hercules airswept mill system
allows grinding, classifying and drying to take place simultaneously.
Pulverised material from the grinding zone is carried by the air stream to
a separator mounted directly above the mill. From here, product size
material is carried to a collection cyclone while oversize particles are
rejected and recycled for further grinding. The conveying air stream can
be heated to flash dry the material being ground.
The Hercules screen mill has been the workhorse of the quarrying industry
for more than 90 years. It has the ability to grind feed as large as 60mm
down to desired fineness in a single operation without auxiliary sizing
equipment.
