Move for Wolfson Centre UK.
Construction of new laboratories and research facilities for the Wolfson Centre are underway at the Medway Campus of the University of Greenwich at Chatham Maritime, Kent, UK. The £1 m investment centres around a new 420 sq m laboratory to house pilot-size testing facilities and involves a move from existing premises at Woolwich in southeast London.
The Wolfson Centre is renowned for providing research, consultancy and educational services to industry in the technologies associated with powders and granular solid materials. Prof Alan Reed, the Centre's director, said that the project was a fine example of the university's commitment to this important, but often neglected, area of technology, and the continuous development and improvement of the services offered to industry.
Safety accreditation for Collinson UK.
Collinson is one of the latest group of companies to receive accreditation from SAFEcontractor, a programme which recognises high standards of health and safety practice amongst UK contractors. Employing 85 people, Collinson is principally involved in the supply and installation of wide span tension membrane buildings and bulk materials handling systems.
SAFEcontractor accreditation is expected to enhance the company's ability to attract new contracts and it's commitment to safety will be viewed positively by its insurers when the company’s liability policy is up for renewal. The scheme, operated by international safety, health and environmental risk management specialists, National Britannia Group, is particularly relevant to food manufacture. Businesses undergo a vetting process, which examines health and safety procedures and their track record for safe practice.
Discharger for pneumatic conveying
Fkexicon’s new BFF series bulk bag discharger, for use with inline, pneumatic conveying systems, is designed to eliminate dust during the process of untying, discharging, collapsing, retying and removal of bulk bags while increasing safety and promoting complete discharge of bag contents.
A new bag-to-conveyor interface utilises an upper section containing a Spout-Lock® clamp ring positioned above a pneumatically actuated Tele-Tube® telescoping tube which allows dustight connections between bag spout and hopper, as well as automatic tensioning of the bag as it empties, promoting flow and evacuation. The lower section comprises a small surge hopper that directs material into a pneumatic pick-up adapter with four conveying line connections.
BFF units utilise top-mounted receiving cups and removable bag-lifting frames for forklift loading of bulk bags and are also offered with a cantilevered I-beam and electric hoist and trolley to raise and position bulk bags without a forklift. Z-Clip™ strap holders ensure rapid, secure insertion and removal of bag straps. Integrated scale systems are also available for direct batching applications.

Braby diversifies
UK. Braby, the silo, vessel and tank specialist, has become exclusive distributor for the Oktomat big bag and Oktobox unloading system from Germany. This follows the recent partnering with Epipack in Slovenia, to distribute stretch wrapping systems, and Silo Tank in Belfast to distribute GRP and thermoplastic tanks. One year into a MBO, Braby’s strategy is set to diversify into areas which complement its existing product range. Sales and marketing director, Paul Mayer says that the system is unique to the UK.
New sodium bicarbonate plant
Germany. Solvay has confirmed that it will start to manufacture sodium bicarbonate at its Bernburg site in Germany at the end of 2005 with a nominal capacity of 100,000 t per annum. The move follows the recent acquisition of American Soda in the US.
Sodium bicarbonate, marketed by Solvay under the BICAR® brand name, is used in a wide variety of fast-growing applications. It contributes substantially to environmental protection with the NEUTREC® process, developed by Solvay for flue gas treatment. Special grades of the product, manufactured to stringent pharmaceutical requirements, can be used in several pharmaceutical and paramedical applications and the material is also traditionally used in human and animal food industries, detergents, fire extinguishers and most recently for cleaning surfaces and removing asbestos in buildings.
SHAPA supports SOLIDS event
UK. SHAPA (Solids Handling and Processing Association) has established a partnership with Easyfairs for the forthcoming Solids Exhibition which takes place in Bolton, UK on 10 - 11 May 2005. Describing the event as ‘a show with a clear focus’, the association has worked alongside Easyfairs to ensure that both exhibitors and visitors alike are made fully aware of the great opportunity that this show offers. Around 50 per cent of SHAPA members are exhibiting.
Mike Slack, vice chairman of SHAPA, says that SOLIDS provides an exhibition that is totally dedicated to manufacturers and users of solids handling equipment. The event is backed up by a series of LearnShops, events designed to educate and promote debate on a variety of issues relevant to efficient processing, handling and storage - an important factor for an association keen to promote best practice.
